New Chairman takes the reins at Kerikeri Retirement Village

Mike Simm has been appointed Chairman of the Board of the Kerikeri Retirement Village. Suzanne Brocx, a nurse, educator and local dairy farmer, has been appointed deputy Chairman.

Mr Simm joined the Board in 2012. He replaces John Baird, who remains on the Board.

He, his wife Lynn and their four children moved to Kerikeri in 1990 after purchasing the Fullers tourism business with two other partners. After selling his share of the business in 2002 he became a professional company director, playing a role in the development of businesses across the region. In 2012 he was inducted into the Northland Chamber of Commerce Hall of Fame in recognition of his contribution.

He is also a trustee of several not-for-profit organisations and is a Justice of the Peace.

Other Board members are Kevin Hall, Brent Hewitt and Vicki Douglas - all highly-skilled locals with intimate knowledge of Kerikeri, its people and their needs.

They have oversight of the Village’s development and operations and provide direction to the chief executive and management.

Appointment to the Board is for a three-year term, re-electable for two further terms. Trustees meet bi-monthly at the Village and they are all unpaid volunteers.

“This is significant when you consider that these are particularly challenging times for the aged care sector,” said Kerikeri Retirement Village chief executive Hilary Sumpter.

“Demand for our services is increasing like never before, regulation is the tightest it has ever been and unprecedented pressure is being placed on resources. So imaginative and solutions-led governance is needed. Happily we’re able to find it right here at home.”
